Difference Between Color Correction and Color Grading

The art of Film-making is full of interesting techniques and fun. You must have heard of Color Correction and Color Grading often used as same. Well, that’s not true in the context of making any artwork. We will discuss the differences and compare their uses, but before that let’s understand what exactly Color Correction and Color Grading are.

Color Correction – A Brief Discussion

We all enjoy the amazing color tone of the films - be it the action scene, the color combination of the background. Have you ever wondered how these are made? This is where color correction comes into the picture. So basically color correction is nothing but the process where each frame’s appearance is adjusted according to the need of the scene. And the credit for filtering the best color for the film goes to the colorist and the art director.

The color correction is the process followed after the production of the film. It requires editing software for adjusting different parameters of color like – brightness, contrast, saturation, etc. Not only this, a colorist with his color correction skills can make or break a scene and it totally depends on how skillful he/she is.

Yes, let us look at an example – suppose an actress gives her best performance in a particular cut of a scene but due to faulty lights the scene looks compromised, then in such case, a colorist can save the master-piece with color grading skills. Also, a color correction deals with Visual Effects (VFX) for better color optimization.

Color Grading – An Overview

The next step after the color correction is color grading. But before telling about Color grading, will you believe me if I say that colors can change a person’s mood, emotions, and psychological thinking and this all comprise color grading. So, basically speaking after completion of color correction, the creativity did on the piece of artwork to enhance its beauty can be termed as color grading.

Frankly speaking, color grading involves technical aspects, but it is leaner towards the creativity side. The grading of an image makes it look more stylish. With improving software the color grading has achieved a new height and continues to amaze us with magnificent artworks.

Drawing a line of Comparison

Having defined them above gives us an idea of how these two processes work in the post-production of film-making. However, there are some key differences that are essential to highlight. But before that let’s look at an example for a better understanding.

Drawing a line of Comparison
In the widely known web series – Games of Thrones the tone of the background is usually shown as Icy indicating a diplomatic battle with calmness. Simply if you put, throughout the series, the mood of the series is pressuring but calm at the same time. This depicts the use of color grading in film-making.

Similarly, all the mythical creatures, as well as battle with them in the series, are created with the help of Visual Effects (VFX), which is nothing but a technical substitute for color correction. We all enjoyed the action scenes and all thanks go to the colorist and art director for showing us the essence of color correction.

I hope you all must have understood the difference with the above example. However, as promised below are the key details on comparison between the two techniques used after film production.
